Grimsby Borough 0-2 Blyth Spartans Match Report.

Blyth Spartans braved Storm Boelo and earned an impressive 2-0 win against Grimsby Borough with goals from Dan Lanning and Olly Martin.

Blyth could have taken the lead inside of three minutes as a lovely move found Jakub Zmich in space but his left footed effort was fired wide.

The Wilderness Boys had their best opportunity in the first half as Spartans stopper Callum Dobson made an uncharacteristic mistake.

Dobson played the ball into the path of Harvey Cribb but he couldn’t convert his effort into the empty goal.

Marc Nash’s side had various opportunities to open the scoring which eventually came in the 40th minute, Jack Foalle slipped an inviting ball behind the Grimsby defence which allowed Lanning to fire home into the top corner.

Half Time: Grimsby Borough 0-1 Blyth Spartans

Ricky Ravenhill’s side started the second half sharp with the wind behind them they pinned Blyth back but were unable to capitalise and level the game.

Dobson played a key role in the second half making three crucial saves to preserve Blyth’s clean sheet.

Marc Nash turned to his bench early in the second half which allowed his side to match the hosts physically and they were rewarded in the 79th minute with a penalty for their defensive grit.

After being sidelined for over two months, Martin stepped up to take the penalty and converted powerfully in front of the travelling fans.

The victory maintains Spartans' position in the play-offs with Marc Nash’s side now winning eight in their last nine.

Blyth’s next fixture is away at Hallam FC on Tuesday night, The Countrymen currently sit bottom of the NPL East having failed to win any of their opening 15 games.
