Blyth Spartans will be looking to build on their comeback victory over play-off rivals Matlock Town on Tuesday night as they head to Grimsby Borough.

A Dan Lanning double and Jack Foalle’s second strike in as many games was enough to defeat the Gladiators 3-2 on what was a challenging night for Spartans as they extended their winning run at Croft Park to 10 consecutive games.

Blyth now find themselves sixth in the NPL East and could move as high as third depending on other results on Saturday afternoon.

The Opponents: Grimsby Borough

Grimsby Borough currently sit 18th in the NPL East having picked up 14 points from their opening 13 games.

Nine of their 14 points have been won in the last four games with their only defeat coming to play-off chasing Pontefract Collieries.

Grimsby managed to defeat Beverley Town in their last fixture which has allowed them to extend the gap to the relegation zone to three points.

From The Dugout: Ricky Ravenhill

Ricky Ravenhill was appointed manager just under a month ago and already seems to have revitalised Grimsby Borough after their poor start to the season.

He has already guided them to three wins against fellow strugglers, Ashington, Hallam and Beverley Town keeping clean sheets in all three of those fixtures.

The former Bradford City, Doncaster Rovers and Grimsby Town midfielder was at Matlock Town as manager when the 26/27 season began but after a poor stint in the Gladiators dugout he will be looking to learn from experience and guide Grimsby away from danger.

Last Time Out: Blyth Spartans 4-0 Grimsby Borough.

Blyth Spartans had just defeated Bridlington Town 4-1 in the midweek and were coming into this fixture full of confidence as they looked to work their way out of the relegation zone.

Blyth claimed their first goal just before half time, a lovely move developed down the left side with Jordan Summerly finding Jack Foalle who squared the ball into the path of oncoming Paul Van-Zandvliet who tapped home.

Spartans doubled their advantage in the 56th minute through Michael Fowler, a deep cross was headed towards goal by Foalle forcing a low save out of the Grimsby goalkeeper but Fowler was on hand to poke home the rebound.

Three minutes later it was 3-0 and Zach Simpson was the scorer, Rio Joisce picked up the ball on the edge of the box and laid it into the path of Simpson who powered the ball into the back of the net.

A brilliant seven minute period of the second half was rounded off by Fowler who claimed his second of the afternoon, another well worked move was finished by Fowler who converted from Andy Evans’ cross.
