TEAM NEWS

Jon Shaw mentioned that the squad he will be fielding will be heavily focussed on the under-19s.

However, the likes of Billy Gordon, Rio Joisce, Michael Hogan and Charlie Aitken are all set to receive valuable minutes.

WHAT WE’RE SAYING

Looking ahead to the Northumberland Senior Cup, Jon Shaw said: “The Monday game I’m probably going to shuffle the squad and look at the under-19s.

“I do respect the competition itself, but like you said the quick turnaround, the size of our squad with the injuries that we’ve had and the way we’re just trying to look after people, there’s a couple of perfect opportunities to get to see the young lads in the squad.”

OPPOSITION

Newcastle Benfield currently reside in the Northern Football League Division One, where they sit 16th in the league with 28 points.

In their last outing, Benfield lost 1-0 to Heaton Stannington through a Jordan Lashley strike in the third minute.

LAST TIME WE MET

The sides last met in August 2016 in a pre-season friendly at Sam Smith’s Park where Blyth won 3-1 as Luke Armstrong, Alex Nicholson and Sean Reid all scored for Spartans, and former player Paul Brayson scored for Newcastle Benfield.

The sides also met three years prior in a pre-season friendly at Croft Park, where Blyth won 4-2.

However, in the Northumberland Senior Cup, the sides last met in November 2011 in the first round of the competition as Newcastle Benfield would go on to win 2-1 at Croft Park.
