Phil Hogg Appointed as Goalkeeper Coach at Blyth Spartans AFC
Friday, 18 July 2025
Colin Myers has concluded the recruitment of his management team by announcing the appointment of Phil Hogg as the club's new Goalkeeper Coach ahead of the upcoming season.
Phil brings with him a wealth of playing and coaching experience from across the Northeast football scene. His playing career began at the age of 17 when he signed for South Shields following a short spell with Darlington. He went on to represent several respected non-league sides, including Newcastle Blue Star, Morpeth Town, Whitley Bay, and Team Northumbria, before returning to Morpeth Town. In 2005, Phil joined Blyth Spartans on loan from Morpeth Town. While he didn't make a first-team appearance due to the arrival of Adam Bartlett, the club left a lasting impression, one he is proud to revisit in this new chapter. After retiring from playing, Phil began his coaching career at Whitley Bay, where he focused on goalkeeper development. His return to Blyth Spartans marks a significant step in his coaching career.
Colin Myers on the appointment said:
I am delighted to welcome Phil Hogg to the coaching team as our new Goalkeeper Coach. Phil brings with him a wealth of experience from across the Northeast non-league circuit, having played and coached at a number of well-respected clubs. He has extensive knowledge of the game, and that insight will be invaluable as we look to strengthen and develop our goalkeepers at the club. What makes this appointment even more special is Phil's previous connection to the club. Having signed for Blyth Spartans himself as a number two to Adam Bartlett, he fully understands the standards, expectations, and passion that come with representing this football club. He knows what it means to be part of the Spartans family and appreciates the unique bond between the players, staff, and our incredible supporters. Phil's professionalism, energy, and dedication to player development make him an ideal fit for the role, and I am confident he will make a significant impact both on and off the pitch this season.
Phil spoke about how proud he was to join the club and why it is so special, and his aims for what he wants to achieve with our keepers:
It's a proud moment to join a club with such a strong legacy in non-league football. I'm excited to work with Colin, Bowsa, Derek, and a very talented group of goalkeepers. My focus will be on instilling a high-performance culture, developing our keepers technically, tactically, and mentally to meet the demands of the season. What makes Blyth Spartans truly special is its community. The supporters and volunteers are the lifeblood of the club. I hope to contribute to a campaign that gives them plenty to shout about.
The club extends a warm welcome to Phil and looks forward to the energy and experience he will bring to the coaching team.
