Mauro Asikaogu joins Blyth

Thursday, 4 June 2026

Blyth Spartans AFC is pleased to announce the signing of 22-year-old goalkeeper Mauro Asikaogu from Whitley Bay.

A product of the Park View academy, Mauro made a big impact in their youth set up and quickly broke into the first team. He'd continue to impress in the first team and join Gateshead on a dual registration, where he'd be an unused substitute in their FA Trophy final defeat in 2023.

Following another two successful years at Park View, Asikaogu made the jump up to Whitley Bay in the Northern League's first tier, where he'd have an instant impact on the side.

Mauro would go onto pick up several Man of the Match awards and Player of the Month awards at Whitley Bay, as well as winning the Northern League Goalkeeper of the Month early in the season.

Asikaogu ended the 2025/26 campaign with 16 clean sheets in total across 42 games, leading the Bay to the Northern League playoff's and the Northumberland Senior Cup final - where he'd make the winning save in the shootout to secure victory for Whitley Bay.

Spartans goalkeeper coach Phil Hogg couldn't hide his delight after the club secured the signing of the young shot stopper, saying:

“We're absolutely delighted to bring Mauro to Blyth Spartans. He was a goalkeeper we identified early and, given the level of interest from other clubs, we knew we would have to work hard to secure his signature.

Mauro comes to us after an outstanding season with Whitley Bay where he consistently showed the qualities we look for in a goalkeeper. He's athletic, an excellent shot-stopper, commands his area well and is very comfortable in possession.

He already has valuable senior football experience and has shown he can perform consistently under pressure. We believe he's ready to take the next step in his career and make a real impact at this level.

Just as importantly, his mentality and work ethic are first class. He's ambitious, hungry to improve and determined to keep developing his game.

We're excited to start working with Mauro and we're confident our supporters will quickly see the quality he brings. We believe he has all the attributes to be a very successful goalkeeper for Blyth Spartans”.

First-team Manager Marc Nash added:

After Callum went back to Hebburn the GK position became a big priority.

We involved keeper coach Hoggy (Phil Hogg) in the recruitment as it's such an important relationship and we are all delighted to get Mauro on board.

He's had a tremendous season and I actually seen him play twice towards the back end of the campaign including the senior cup final where he showed his quality.
