Grimsby Borough v Blyth Spartans | Saturday, 4 October 2025 - 15:00 | League
Spartans' strong second-half performance wasn't enough to break the resolute Grimsby Borough defence as Blyth lost 1-0 away from home.
Storm Amy was in full force for The Spartans in the first half, with Blyth having to kick against it, which was a detriment because the Spartans' preferred style of play is to go direct, and because of that, they struggled in the opening period to get out and get a foothold in the game.
Weather conditions didn't allow them to go long, with the ball frequently spinning back in the direction of Callum Dobson, which meant Grimsby Borough could keep pressuring the Spartans' defence from goal kicks, but they held off that wave of pressure well in the opening period, with Dobson only having to make a few routine saves that were straight at him.
The home side used the windy conditions to their advantage when a simple long ball over the top found Charlie Burden-Whittleton one-on-one against Dobson, and the forward finished past the on-rushing keeper to give Grimsby the lead inside the first 25 minutes.
Half time: Grimsby Borough 1-0 Blyth Spartans
Blyth had the wind with them in the second half and looked most likely to score out of the two sides. They had a lot of the ball and got it into wide areas, with new signing Louis Burns looking dangerous throughout the game.
As the game entered the final stages, Jake Dobinson's long throw found Arran Wearmouth, who brought it down nicely and got off an effort at close range, but it was somehow kept out by the home side to keep them ahead.
With only a few minutes left, Spartans were pushing for the equaliser and nearly got it through Dan Maw, whose shot from the edge of the box crashed off the inside of the crossbar to deny Blyth again.
In the end, it wasn't the Spartans' day. Blyth played well in the second half and created opportunities, but Grimsby defended well to keep them out.
