It's a quick turnaround for Blyth Spartans as they face Dunston FC away from home in their next clash in the Northern Premier League East.

The Spartans' last match was a 2-1 defeat to Pontefract Collieries on Saturday. Despite a first goal in green and white for Euan Potts, it wasn't enough to take any points back to Croft Park.

Spartans will be desperate to get back on track with a victory after three defeats in a row; however, they face a difficult test against a well-drilled Dunston side.

The Opposition: Dunston FC

Dunston was founded in 1975, nicknamed The Fed, they originally played their matches in Longbenton in the Newcastle City Amateur League, but due to early success with the club, they needed to move, acquiring land in Gateshead, where they started to develop what is now known as the UTS Stadium.

Dunston are six-time winners in the League Cup and FA Vase champions after their triumph in 2011/12. A fantastic run to the final saw them face off against West Auckland Town, defeating them 2-0 at Wembley Stadium.

After winning the division one title for a third time in 2018/19, Dunston were promoted to the Northern Premier League West Division and had to rename the club from Dunston UTS to Dunston FC due to FA regulations regarding sponsors in clubs' playing name.

League reorganisation saw Dunston placed into the Northern Premier League East for the 2021/22 season, and they have been very close to promotion on two occasions but have missed out in the final, losing on penalties to Stockton Town and Stocksbridge Park Steels.

The Fed have been in fantastic form recently, only losing two of their last 10 matches in all competitions. They will be looking to continue that form when Blyth visit in an attempt to once again push for promotion.

One to Watch

Dunston has multiple ex Spartans in their squad, Harry Gardiner, JJ O'Donnell, Phil Turnbull, Dan Lowson & Dunston captain Michael Pearson.

However, the player to watch for this encounter is David Robinson, the midfielder who scored 14 goals last season for The Fed and scored his first goal of this season in their 2-1 win over Bridlington Town.

Robinson will be looking to maintain his form and attempt to reach the levels of output he was showing last season.

From the Dugout

Jon McDonald was appointed manager of Dunston in May 2023 following the departure of the previous head coach, Chris Swailes.

Since then, McDonald has led them to consecutive play-off finishes, recording their best-ever league performance last season, where they accumulated 81 points and finished second in the Northern Premier League East.

Already this season, Dunston have qualified for the first round of the FA Trophy, where they will face Hebburn Town, and have also advanced in the Durham Challenge Cup, dispatching Sunderland's Academy 5-0.

Dunston is currently placed 13th in the league table; however, with games in hand on teams above them, the aim from the management team will be to reach the play-offs for a third consecutive season and attempt to go one step further than previous efforts.

What has been said?

Colin Myers spoke after the defeat on the weekend. Here's what was said:

We should have had a point out of the game.

We had two upfront, so we always knew we would be a threat when we did go forward, and that worked to an extent.

We've got to come back big and strong, we have to stay together, and we have to give it our best.
