Blyth Spartans turn their attention to the second game of their Northern Premier League East Division campaign as they travel to Consett AFC on Tuesday night.

A quick turnaround for Colin Myers' side after their season opener on Saturday against Redcar Athletic ended in defeat.

With the season underway and games coming thick and fast, Spartans will be looking to put some points on the board to kickstart their campaign.

The Opposition: Consett AFC

Consett AFC was established on 1 July 1899 as Consett Celtic before being renamed Consett in 1922.

The Steelmen joined the Northern Alliance League in 1919, just before being renamed and have been crowned Durham Challenge Cup winners seven times, most recently in the 2017-18 season.

Consett also reached the final of the FA Vase in the 2019/20 season, where they lost out 3-2 to Hebburn Town in a match that was delayed until May 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the 2021/22 season, Consett were runners-up in Northern League Division One, qualifying for an inter-step play-off against Histon from the division above, which they won 2-1 and earned promotion to the Northern Premier League for the first time.

Consett will be looking to bounce back against The Spartans on home soil after their opening day defeat to Grimsby Borough.

One to Watch

An interesting battle lies ahead for the Spartans' midfield. Marc Costello is the player the Spartans need to watch out for. The 38-year-old was signed last summer from Newton Aycliffe and was one of Consett's most consistent performers last year.

Costello scooped four awards last season for Consett, winning Player of the Year, Players' Player of the Year, Supporters' Player of the Year and Manager's Player of the Year in a season where he featured in all 46 of Consett's matches, also netting three times.

The experienced midfielder is capable of controlling any game he plays and should set up for a great battle in the engine room.

From the Dugout

In the Consett dugout is the UEFA-qualified coach, Jason Miller.

Miller, who was appointed as boss in September 2024, has spent time as the academy manager at Newcastle Elite Academy before taking the managerial role for The Steelmen.

Miller had a steady season last year with Consett, finishing mid-table and will be looking to push higher up the table this season.

What has been said?

Spartans boss Colin Myers was asked if there were any positives he could take from the Redcar Athletic game?

He said:

The first 20-25 minutes were decent. We were in a decent shape. The goal was a good goal, so there were some decent individual performances.

Everybody was disappointed and gutted. We need to get our arms around the players, have a look at the squad and see if some of the lads left out of the squad deserve a run out on Tuesday.
