Spartans picked up a point in their previous match against Emley AFC on Saturday afternoon.

Despite a much improved performance Blyth couldn't convert any of the chances they created to claim three points against the Pewits.

Next up for the Spartans is another game at Croft Park against Matlock Town who have started the season in fine form and will prove to be another difficult test.

The Opposition: Matlock Town

Matlock Town, nicknamed the Gladiators, were founded in 1878.

The Gladiators are multiple time winners of the Derbyshire Senior cup most recently winning the trophy in 2016/17, they were also victorious in the FA Trophy in the 1974/75 season where they defeated Scarborough FC 4-0 to lift the trophy at Wembley Stadium.

Matlock managed to reach the first round proper of the FA Cup for three consecutive seasons between 1974/75 and 1976/77, the first two occasions they were defeated 4-1 by Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic however, they managed to get revenge on the latter the following season defeating them 2-0 before being knocked out by Carlisle United 5-1.

The Gladiators were relegated last season with Blyth Spartans but have staked a major claim for promotion this season sitting in second place just one point behind league leaders Redcar Athletic.

Player to Watch

Liam Ravenhill is the player to watch in this matchup, he is the Gladiators vice captain but has had to fill in as captain on multiple occasions already this season.

The midfielder has the ability to control any game and can create multiple chances for a very potent forward line which has fired many goals already this season.

It is set to be an interesting matchup with Blyth's new look midfield which managed to hold play-off challengers Emley to a goalless draw.

From the Dugout

Adam Clayton is the Gladiators permanent first team Player/Manager for the 2025/26 season.

Originally appointed as interim manager in March 2025 the appointment of Player/Manager for Clayton was confirmed in April 2025.

Clayton will be looking to earn promotion with Matlock in his first attempt and after recent victories against title challengers Redcar Athletic and Emley AFC, they will be full of confidence going into the match.

What has been said:

Colin Myers spoke after a hard fought draw at home to Emley AFC.

Here's what was said:

It was all about the performance today, we drilled it into the lads all day that they have to be on top of their game.

I thought Evansy (Andy Evans) was aggressive and horrible to play against, I'm over the moon with Jeremy (Perera) he was good at getting us on the front foot getting us forward.

The crowd were fantastic today, even the lads have mentioned how good the supporters are, they are the best supporters in the Northeast and we've got to get everybody together.
