Blyth Spartans return to Croft Park for their first home fixture of pre-season this Saturday, as Colin Myers' new-look side face National League North opponents Darlington FC.
After edging out Tow Law Town 1-0 in midweek, the Spartans will face a sterner test against a Darlington side packed with experience and firepower. It's the first chance for fans to see Myers' squad in action on home soil—and an opportunity to get behind the lads as they continue building momentum ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
The Opposition: Darlington FC
Darlington were founded in 1883 and have a proud history in the North East football scene. They became a founding member of the Northern League and have enjoyed notable cup runs over the years - reaching the FA Cup last 16 in 1910-11 and the League Cup quarterfinals in 1968.
Darlington finished 11th in the 2024/25 - up from 16th the season prior. With a strong summer in terms of recruitment, the Quakers will prove a strong adversary for tomorrow's friendly.
From the Dugout
Darlington are managed by former Newcastle United full-back Steve Watson, who made over 350 appearances in the Premier League during a long playing career. Since moving into management, Watson has taken charge of Gateshead, York City, and Chester before joining the Quakers in December 2023. After steering them to safety last season, he signed a two-year contract extension in the summer.
One to Watch
The Quakers have bolstered their ranks with striker Aidan Rutledge, who hit nine goals on loan at Spennymoor last season. Midfielder Will McGowan also returns after a solid campaign, contributing four goals from the middle of the park. Both players are expected to feature prominently on Saturday.
