We need to be more clinical says Maguire

Spartans striker Dan Maguire bemoaned his sides’ wayward finishing as Witton Albion inflicted a third defeat of the season on Spartans. On a day when Spartans had chances to take something from the game there were several players guilty of squandering opportunities to get themselves on the score sheet and it is this that Maguire feels ultimately cost Spartans the game. He said “We had a load of chances and they have took their chances much better than we did but we have to be better in front of goal. They’re a good side and never give in. They don’t give you a minute on the ball and you know you are under pressure but we still created chances that we couldn’t take”.

Maguire was partnered up front by Spartans new boy Andrew Jennings as they created the classic big man little man partnership and Maguire was full of praise for his new strike partner. “Wherever Andy went today they knew they had to challenge him, he’s a big lad and he was a real handful for them. He won just about every header he went up for even when he had two or three of their lads challenging with him. It’s down to the rest of us to start reading his flick ons and making sure we get on the end of them but he’s done well today for his debut.”

Former Seaton Delaval front man Maguire has now made three consecutive starts for the club after spending a long time remaining patient on the sidelines. However he is looking forward to a busy period coming up and is hoping for more chances to shine. He said “We obviously have a lot of games coming up but it’s a squad game and we need as many players ready to face those. I have had to wait for my chance but I’ve got to now just try my hardest every game and show what I can do”.
