Mellish gutted at late defeat

Spartans defender Jordon Mellish reflected on the injury time defeat against league leaders North Ferriby United and revealed that everyone inside the dressing room were gutted. It was a spirited and determined show from Spartans following a nightmare week on the road that saw them lose three games in seven days but Mellish feels they were unlucky not to get at least a point against the Villagers.

He said “All the lads are gutted in there and we all thought we would hold on. We defended well, we were disciplined and were had a good shape for the majority of the game. They didn’t cause us too much threat and we dealt with them well. Obviously with teams like them the slightest drop in your concentration can cost you and that’s what happened but we deserved a point.”

It was Mellish’s centre back partner Wayne Buchanan whose injury time own goal meant that United made it three wins out of three this season against Spartans but Mellish feels that there were positives to take from the defeat against the runaway leaders of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League.

The former Hartlepool United man said “We just have to keep our heads up, we did well today and matched them for long periods. We now have to build on today and the positives from it. To hang on the way we did and lose it hurt a lot but we can improve and build on today. We need to get today out of our systems, enjoy training and go again on Saturday against Worksop.”
