This is a new occasional feature where ‘expatriate’ fans living outside the Blyth area and travel to away games give a brief review of their day and get to nominate their very own “Away Fan of the Day’.
Kicking it off was Cannock Spartans’ Gray Mullen at the game at Colwyn Bay on Saturday who talked to Phil Castiaux.
Phil: “So Gray what was your journey like today?”
Gray: “It only took us a couple of hours for the journey itself really. We left at nine, then a couple of pickups and we got here at about 11.45 I think and went straight in to Colwyn Bay. A few of our lads were doing other things today so there were just seven of us today in a car.” [Seriously Gray – all seven in one car?!].
Phil: ”What did you make of the game?”
Gray: “Well, I predicted a 2-1 win for us and at half time we’d been all over them and although we were behind I never thought we’d lose. It was always going to be a draw or a win for us. Danny’s goal was scrappy, but a goal’s a goal. When Michael came on, well anything was possible. He likes to get forward and score goals and he did brilliant.”
Phil: “Great, thanks. Ok who is your Spartans ‘Away Fan of the Day’?”
Gray: “Mmm, I’d say Kev from Sheffield to be fair. When we come to games we travel in numbers, six or seven – minimum. But Kev does it on his own. He sang his heart out today and kept going all game. Yes, definitely Kev.”
Phil: “Excellent. Now Gray, who is your Spartans ‘Man of the Match’? “
Gray: “Today? Tough one today. I thought Matty did well. He doesn’t always get the credit he should get. It’s got to be Richardson to be fair with his two goals. All the players played well though and you can’t fault any of them.”
So, well done Kev Walker and Michael!
A short footnote: Manager Tom Wade commented: “Well done to both lads. Kev does fantastically well with his travelling. Mind, all the Spartans fans at Colwyn Bay deserve great credit. I’ve got to mention Cannock Spartans’ Chris Addison as well who delivered his first ever team talk to our lads before kick off. He asked if he could do it and I just said, OK come on then! It was a good laugh and it helped settle the lads down. “
