After playing his part in Spartans convincing away win at Stourbridge, midfielder Stephen Turnbull stressed the importance of the victory to his side. A midweek defeat at home to Ilkeston put an end to a nine game unbeaten run by Spartans so the win over the Glassboys was “essential” according to the former Hartlepool United man.
“I thought we actually played well against Ilkeston and deserved a draw at least but it wasn’t meant to be. We have bounced back with a win over Stourbridge and it was essential that we did that so we can get back on track and try to get in the play offs because that is our aim and I think we can do that”
Turnbull opened the scoring at the War Memorial Stadium with a sublime free kick, his second of the season and whilst his effort at Hartlepool United will be remembered for it’s curve and accuracy, Saturday’s effort was far more imaginative. A foul on Dan Maguire gave Turnbull a free kick twenty five yards from goal and the midfielder admitted that he knew what he was doing before the kick was taken.
“Their keeper set his wall up but he left quite a bit of the inside of the near post showing. I looked up and thought ‘why not?’ so I went for it and lucky enough, it went in. I’m sure a few of the lads will say it was lucky but I knew what I was doing
The defeat against Ilkeston remains the only blip in what has been an impressive period of form for Tom Wade’s side. That has seen that catapulted into the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League play off chase and Turnbull feels that Spartans are benefiting from “playing with confidence and freedom”.
“Recently we have been a different class and have stepped it up a notch. Everyone from one to eleven has been excellent, we are playing with a lot of confidence and freedom that we enjoy playing with, we think we can win every single game we play in”
