Spartans captain Robbie Dale paid tribute to the travelling Green Army as his side demolished Skelmersdale United to progress to the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Cup. Supporters from Sheffield, London, Cannock and of course Northumberland made their way to Lancashire and Dale admitted that his team mates “can’t let them down” after receiving such backing.
“You can see what it means to our supporters, not just the club but this competition. They have come down here and we have outnumbered them. We can’t let them down when they turn up like that, it was for them”
Despite seeing his side score four times Dale felt his side let their hosts off during a second half that saw them create at least six golden chances. The winger gone on the scoresheet with the third goal and was delighted that a tactical plan relayed to the players in pre-match chat had paid off.
“We pressed them well and we were told to press them high. They had a spell in the first half where they had more possession and could have gone in front but second half we took over and it could have been any scoreline given the chances we had”
Attention turns to Monday’s Third Qualifying Round draw and Dale’s hopes were simple. All he wants is to see his side get a home draw after successfully negotiating two tricky away ties against Darlington and now Skelmersdale United.
“We would like a home draw! We haven’t had one for a while so that would be nice, you have a great chance no matter who we play at home”
