TEAM NEWS

Both Alex Mitchell and JJ Hooper were absent from Tuesday evening’s loss away to Blyth Town. Graham Fenton explained that the group of trialists will be cropped ahead of Saturday’s visit to the SecuriCorp Stadium.

OPPOSITION

Newton Aycliffe won the Northern Football League Division One last season and were promoted to the Pitching In Northern Premier League East Division where they will come up against the likes of Dunston UTS, Hebburn Town, Ashington AFC and Consett.

The Newtonians have played three pre-season games so far, losing all three against Spartans’ fellow National League North outfits. They fell to a 2-0 defeat against South Shields, 6-0 against Darlington and 5-0 against Spennymoor Town, all at home.

WHAT WE’RE SAYING

After a loss to local rivals Blyth Town, Graham Fenton said: “It was a competitive first half, I thought we played some decent stuff, opened up some good chances without being brilliant obviously.

“And then in the second half, we just folded like a pack of cards. It was terrible. It was embarrassing, disgusting, but I’ve learnt a lot. These games are about learning your players, so we’ve learnt about the lads who already have contracts, lads who haven’t got contracts yet and who are trying to earn contracts.”
