Spartans striker Daniel Maguire revealed the disappointment amongst his team mates after they brought down the curtain on their home campaign for the season with a poor 1-3 defeat against relegation haunted Kendal Town. A Neal Hooks goal had brought Spartans back on level terms but it was the Mintcakes who went on to win a game that Spartans never really had control of.
He said “It’s disappointing for everyone, we have had a good run recently and we were looking to win tonight to end the season well. We should and could have beat Kendal tonight with the quality they have they are the sort of side we should be beating.”
The former Seaton Deleval striker was keen to stress that everyone in the squad had to hold their hands up and admit mistakes were made on the night and he included himself in that. The forward fed on scraps for most of the night but admitted that he has to make the most of what he gets as chances in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League can be at a premium.
Maguire commented “Things just didn’t come together all over the pitch for us. There were mistakes all over and I know I should have scored what might have only been a half chance but I have to take them. We all have to take the blame for the loss though”
With Spartans season coming to a close on Saturday at Nantwich Town the impact of Maguire has easily been the biggest positive of the season. The diminutive striker has become a firm favourite of the Green Army for his all action, non stop style and has pitched in with seven goals since Christmas. He revealed how much he is loving life at Croft Park and his enthusiasm for his and the club’s future.
“I love it here and people have to know that. It’s a great club, a great set up and we have great fans. Tom has been a massive influence on not only me but the club as a whole. He stuck behind us when things got tough and we have to really pull together over the summer and we can have a good year next year.”
