Spartans defender Danny Parker kick-started his side’s comeback in their 2-1 win over Ashton United tonight with his first goal in the green and white and was quick to reveal his delight at his maiden strike. The former Bishop Auckland centre back powerfully headed home Damen Mullen’s corner kick and was delighted to get off the mark at Croft Park.
“There’s absolutely no feeling like it, I haven’t scored for a while so it was great to see it go in. I have to say fair play to Colin(Myers) because he shouted to get Hooksy back and for me to get into the box. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t have got the goal so really I should be thanking him for that. Obviously I was over the moon to see it go in”
A classic game of two halves saw Spartans have to overcome a half time deficit after a well below par performance during the opening period. Parker admitted that his side weren’t good enough during the first half and was pleased to see them “hit the standards” that has helped Tom Wade’s achieve an impressive start to their Evo-Stik Northern Premier League campaign.
“We have been told that it’s very important to play to our strengths and anyone who has seen us this season knows that is quick passing and moving. For the first half we were just knocking it long and couldn’t get to grips with the game. We were much better in the second half, we upped our performance and hit the standards we know we can achieve week in week out”
The Spartans bandwagon heads to Cheshire this coming Saturday with a journey to Witton Albion, a venue that was the scene of two defeats last season. However Parker feels that confidence is growing in the Spartans camp and it’s only a matter of time before people realise exactly what his side are about.
“It’s a tough game down there but if we keep the performance going that we finished tonight with we can get something. Our confidence is growing game on game and I think in time other teams will know they are in for a game against us”
