We may be heading towards the season of goodwill but Spartans Assistant Manager Colin Myers wants his side to refrain from handing out presents over Christmas. Following tomorrow’s trip to Trafford Spartans face four tricky looking fixtures inside the space of eleven days and the former Bishop Auckland manager has given his side a simple target for the hectic Christmas period and one that if it is achieved will set them up for the rest of the season.
“I believe we have a lot of very winnable games over the Christmas period so it’s key for us. I really think this spell of games will sort us out and if we are still there or thereabouts afterwards we have a definite chance of pushing on. The target is to go out and win every game over Christmas and I hope we can do that”
Last week’s spirited fight back against Marine was achieved with a host of players carrying knocks and with Arran Wearmouth and Ash Davis suspended Spartans were up against it. However Myers revealed that there is light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to having a fully fit squad, something that he feels will benefit himself and Manager Tom Wade as they seek to continue a season that has exceeded pre-season predictions.
“We only have one game to go before we have Arran Wearmouth and Ash Davis back and the injuries are getting sorted so we should have a full squad in the next couple of weeks or so barring any other injuries”
He continued “We still haven’t had a chance to select what I would class as a first choice side for a sustained period of time and that’s seen us found out at times so far. Hopefully after Christmas we can have a good run with our strongest side and get them playing together”
Tomorrow’s trip to Trafford sees Spartans face the opposition who helped them open their Croft Park campaign for the season. On a balmy August evening goals from Joe Kendrick and Dan Maguire saw Spartans edge out the newly promoted Manchester outfit. They currently sit in twentieth position in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League but Myers saw enough during the first meeting to know that his side face a tricky game at Shawe View, something backed up by their midweek win at play off challengers Marine.
“It’ll be a tough game no doubt about that. They’re a good side and to be honest it’s difficult to understand just why they are where they are in the league. We were all very impressed when we played them here and have to be on top form to get anything tomorrow”
