Spartans point saver Damon Mullen praised his team mates for a hardworking performance that earned them a point against Grantham Town but insisted his side deserved more than that. Mullen’s first ever Spartans goal ensured that they secured a 2-2 draw on a day when they continued their recent improvement under the watch of managerial duo Paddy Atkinson and Tom Wade. Mullen commented “To be fair we have played really really well, first half we maybe eased off a little bit and didn’t hold onto the ball as well as we have done. Second half we came out really well and got the equaliser and just kicked on from there. We gave a silly goal away but we showed the spirit to get back into the game and should have had more”.
A winger by trade, Mullen showed his versatility by playing in three separate positions and insisted he would play anywhere for the club. Starting out at full back, he moved to the wing as Joe Kendrick came on and finally played as a wing back as Spartans went chasing the game. He said “Playing left back, left wing and left wing back was a challenge to be honest but I have to do a job if I am asked to. As long as the managers think I can do a job for the club in a position then I am more than happy to do so”.
A maiden Spartans goal from Mullen provoked a reaction of surprise from the winger who was delighted to see that ball hit the back of the net. He said “It was a great moment, it took me by surprise a little bit to be honest. All of the lads were saying that I looked in shock when I turned around. It’s nice to get on the scoresheet and all of the lads have helped me settle in really well again and hopefully we can kick on from here”.
