After being drafted in to replace injured centre back Carl Jones, Spartans defender Jordan Mellish played a key part in the 3-1 win over Matlock Town. The former Hartlepool United man was named man of the match and even managed to grab an assist when his chip into the ball found Ash Davies, who crashed home Spartans first goal and started their comeback. However Mellish feels his side have to start games better and a poor first half show.
He said “First half we were sluggish and slow, basically we were still on the bus and it’s been that way for most of the season. Then in the second half we played much better and got it wide to our dangermen and caused problems. We got at them and we need to do it for all of the game not just the last twenty minutes.”
Whilst many a dressing room may have been full of arguing and shouting during the interval Mellish revealed there was a much calmer approach in the Spartans camp. “There was no shouting or bawling, we were just told it had to be better both individually and as a team. We know we needed to be better and things came right second half” he said.
As said Mellish even played a part in the first goal that started the comeback and was pleased to play a key role. “I saw Craig (Farrell) and played it in but it went over his and their lad’s head and fell to Ash (Davies) who finished really well. It’s great to get another away win and obviously Matlock wanted the win in front of their fans but it’s credit to the lads to get the win.”
