Jordon Mellish hailed his fellow Spartans defenders and keeper Conor Grant after they kept a well earned clean sheet for the first time in five months in the 1-0 win over Grantham Town. An organised and disciplined performance from the Spartans side coupled with some outstanding saves from Grant formed the foundations of the win and Mellish was delighted and relieved to have seen his side deny the Gingerbreads.
He said “It’s about time we kept a clean sheet isn’t it. That’s what all of the lads were saying in the changing room after the game and as a back four or five with Conor that’s what we aim for and that’s what we want so it’s a real positive to have got one today.”
A somewhat low key game ensued and it seemed to be a typical end of season affair during the first half which was rather surprising given that the visitors were still not safe from the relegation places. However Mellish was only bothered about the win and felt his side were worthy winners on the day.
The young defender said “It was always going to be scrappy and it seemed to have a feel of an end of the season game. The most important thing is that we got the win, we kept going and got the goal and the win I think we deserved.”
With the season drawing to a close Mellish feels that despite Spartans last three games being effectively dead rubbers there was still plenty for his fellow team mates to play for. He also revealed that manager Tom Wade has handed out a warning to his players and it’s one that Mellish feels they have to listen to if they want to carry on their careers at Croft Park.
He said “We have to target three more wins. Tom Wade is constantly telling everyone they are effectively on trial to get into the squad for next season so the best way to ensure we all stay here is by winning our last three games. We have spoken about winning them and that’s what we intend on doing.”
