Keeping it clean is key for Skipper Buchanan

Whilst much of the focus in the coming days will be about the attacking display and goalscoring efforts of the likes of Craig Farrell and Robbie Dale, Spartans Captain Wayne Buchanan hailed his defensive counterparts and they gave the side a solid base and kept a first clean sheet of the season. He commented “You look at yourself as a defender when goals are conceded and on Saturday I wondered how I could do better and as a unit what we could do better. We maybe made some little errors tonight when we were too relaxed but I must say young Jordon(Mellish) was outstanding tonight. Carl Jones did well on Saturday as a partnership but as a team we weren’t there but tonight we were better and I was delighted for Jordon”.

Buchanan insists that they key to a successful season at Croft Park will be turning the place into a fortress and not giving visiting sides an easy ride. The former Gateshead man said “We spoke about it before the game and this is our home patch, we need to make sure they know that and teams won’t get it easy here. We went out with a determination and an urgency to get things happening this season because we can’t waste any more time and we need to put points on the board.”

More than anything though Buchanan expressed his delight at the reaction of his side following the game despite the fact his own overwhelming emotion was a one of relief. “It was brilliant in there, I was just relieved and sat there but the rest of the lads were jumping around and shouting. Hopefully now we can take this and give our supporters something to get uplifted about and see that the boys have their hearts in it and we want to get back up there” he said.

However despite an excellent win and a positive start to their home campaign there was a word of caution from experienced centre back Buchanan for his younger team mates and something he had stressed to them already. “We won’t get carried away, it’s only one win and three points but it gives us something to build on and take into a tough game on Saturday but it’s one game at a time and see what happens”.

Hednesford Town are next up at Croft Park this coming Saturday and Buchanan will be looking to lead his side to another three points.
