Foundations in place for Cassidy

Following his side’s 1-1 draw with Blue Square Premier side Gateshead, Spartans manager Tommy Cassidy declared himself happy that the core of side is in place as preparations are made for the upcoming season. The former Newcastle United midfielder said “The core of the team is right but we just need to fill in and around it but we do need more experienced players to help these kids and if we can bring them in who knows.” Cassidy was quick to point out that whilst Tuesday’s 1-3 defeat at Ashington was somewhat disappointing, the game against the Colliers was always one that he was treating as an opportunity to look at potential signings. “Tuesday was a trial game and I needed to see what some of the players were like but today we did very well against a very good side in Gateshead, I was very pleased”

Former York City and Carlisle United striker Craig Farrell netted his second goal in two pre-season games for the Spartans and Cassidy was quick to point out that Farrell could be a key player going forward for his side. “He did very well today, he’s a good player and he didn’t want to come off but as manager I have to look at the bigger picture. He’s scored a great goal and should have had another but he’s getting chances and if we can create he will put them away.”

Cassidy will hope for further improvement from his side as they travel to Sunderland RCA in their next pre-season friendly on Tuesday night.
