An enraged Tommy Cassidy branded his side’s performance against Workington on Monday as ‘embarrassing’ and claimed it was simply not good enough for a club of Blyth Spartans’ stature.
After taking the Croft Park hot seat last month, his first two games have both ended in defeat at the hands of Workington – a club he used to manage.
And the 2-0 loss on Boxing Day in Cumbria followed by a 3-0 home defeat has led Cassidy into admitting that the task of keeping the club in the Blue Square Bet North is harder than he had initially anticipated.
The Blyth Spartans manager also said that he is working hard to bring in new faces as soon as possible to bolster a confidence drained squad in an attempt to avoid relegation to the Evo-Stik Premier Division.
Speaking after Monday’s game Cassidy said: “Today was embarrassing.
“If I had walked into our dressing room today after the match as a player I would have been embarrassed and I hope they are.” he added.
“Some players have got to look at themselves in the mirror tonight, it’s as simple as that.” said the former Northern Ireland international.
The straight talking Ulsterman made his feelings clear to his players after the final whistle.
“I had a go at them after the match but I didn’t want to.
“It doesn’t give me any satisfaction but I was embarrassed to shake their manager’s hand, I felt like saying sorry for not putting a show on.”
In his short time in charge, Cassidy has already acted quickly in the transfer market, bringing in Jordan Mellish from Hartlepool United, Sam Hodgson from Whitby Town and Max Harrop – who has arrived on loan from Bury.
Cassidy has told Spartans fans to expect more signings in the coming weeks.
“We’ve now got 12 points out of a possible 66 so the situation isn’t going to improve unless we change things dramatically.
“After the two performances I’ve seen I know we are short in quite a few areas so I’ll be looking to bring more players to the club.” said Cassidy.
On Monday’s game itself, Cassidy commented: “That was not good enough for Blyth Spartans Football Club.
“Our defending was atrocious and we barely tested their goalkeeper.
“What worried me more than anything was that we lost every single 50-50 challenge all over the park.”
He added: “I know their players and technically we’re just as good as them but there’s obviously something missing and I’ve got to find out what that is.”
