Spartans man of the match Conor Grant revealed his delight in not only his own performance but also that of his team as they came away from Kendal Town with a first league away win in almost six months. Two goals from Lee Mason and one from Stephen Turnbull gave Spartans the three points but it was Grant who walked away with the man of the match award after making three outstanding saves as the home side cranked up the pressure looking to force an equaliser.
Grant said “It’s a good away win and we were a bit under the cosh near the end but the defence have played well and we have all done our jobs. It’s a bit of a relief to get our first away win since September I think it is and it’s a nice feeling to get on the bus with three points in the bag”
As the hosts went looking for an equaliser they found Grant in unbeatable form as he pulled off three superb stops to deny Zach Clark, Aaron Taylor and Rob Wilson in the last twenty minutes. Whilst many pointed to the save from Clark’s twenty yard volley Grant was more satisfied with the point blank stop from substitute Taylor that came just before Spartans sealed the win with Lee Mason’s second of the night. He revealed “I was proud of the save from the lad at the far post I made with my foot. It may have been a decent height for me but I’ve made myself big and thrown myself at it in hope more than anything but I think that’ll be going on my highlight reel.”
Going into the interval a goal down was never ideal for Spartans but Grant revealed there were some strong words spoken in the dressing room during the break and felt his side deserved credit for turning it around and wants to see Spartans carry on their good showing as they travel to Nantwich Town on Saturday. After carrying a knock for a few weeks the keeper also hopes to be ready for the trip to Lancashire.
He said “We had to be better second half and of course we had the slope as well so that worked in our favour. We were late getting here but we said at half time that we had to put that out of our system and really go at them. We knew the three points were there for the taken. “I’m a bit sore and a bit stiff, I’m still carrying a bit of a knock but I am normally quite good at nursing injuries. I am just pleased to be in the team again and to get a win, I’ll be doing my own rehab on the knock and get it looked at on Thursday but I’m sure I’ll be ready for Saturday.”
