Cornish began playing Northern League football whilst at Durham University, and featured for sides such as Newcastle Benfield, Whitley Bay and AFC Consett.  While studying his Masters degree in America, Cornish featured for Nova Southeastern University in Florida, and helped the team reach the National semi-finals.
