Preview | Guiseley AFC (A)

Blyth Spartans open up their National League North campaign with a trip to Guiseley on Tuesday evening.

Michael Nelson’s men travel to West Yorkshire on the back of a 4-2 win at Whitley Bay in the FA Cup Second Round Qualifying.

It will be Blyth’s first league game since March after the coronavirus outbreak saw the 2019/20 season suspended.

THE OPPONENTS

Joint-managers Marcus Bignot and Russell O’Neill led the The Lions into play-off contention last season before the season was suspended.

Since then, Guiseley have lost top goalscorer Aaron Martin to Harrogate Town but hit the goal scoring trail during their FA Cup tie.

Kaine Felix could be the man to watch after he scored two in their 4- 0 win against Atherton Collieries.

WHAT WE’RE SAYING

Speaking after his hat-trick against Whitley, captain Simon Heslop said: “It’s all about recovering and going again on Tuesday.

“It’s been a heavy pitch and there is going to be a lot of Saturday/ Tuesday games, so it’s important we recover as quickly as possible and refill the tank.“

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

“It’ll be a tough game,” joint-manager Russell O’Neill told Guiseley’s website.

“We don’t know what to expect. They’ve got a new manager, a load of new signings.

“From what I can gather, they play high intensity and have young players so they’ll bring a lot of energy.

“Conference North games are so difficult it’s untrue, but we’ll look forward to it and hopefully get another clean sheet and three points.”

The Lions left Croft Park with all three points as a brace from Aaron Martin contributed to a 4-1 win.

In Blyth’s last visit to Nethermoor Park however, Spartans claimed a 3-1 away victory courtesy of goals from Dan Maguire (2) and Aaron Cunningham.
