1533 spectators crammed into Croft Park to witness the great escape as Blyth Spartans attempted to to beat Hereford; a team they have never taken a point from in past meetings, in order to climb out of the relegation zone on the final match of the season. Of course Spartans also relied on Kidderminster Harriers and Spennymoor Town to beat Kettering Town and Farsley Celtic.
Spartans went two up in the first half with goals from Michael Spellman and Cedric Main. At half time Blyth were out of the relegation zone with 45 minutes left to secure National League North security. As the second half progressed, Blyth extended the lead with a penalty from Deverdics before the visitors were reduced to 10 men. Two more goals from O’Donnell and Ferguson secured Blyth’s future in the National League North. Enjoy a selection of match action images from Bill Broadley.
