Spartans versus Berwick had a familiar ring to it. This time it was the Under 10s at home in the Divisional Cup in their first competitive game of the season and debuts were given to Matthew Giloney, Lewis Wilkinson, Adam Stobbart and Brooklyn Holcz. Berwick took the kick off and a charge down from Lewis Best led to him taking possession and running through the Berwick midfield and defence to slot the ball past the keeper for the quickest goal I’ve seen scored in mini soccer in under ten seconds. What a start, but this was soon cancelled out when Berwick came back at us within minutes and equalised. Best then scored again to make it 2-1, with his hat trick coming from a corner delivered by Brooklyn Holcz. By the end of the first quarter, Berwick had pulled another goal back to make it 3-2. The second quarter saw Berwick score two to pull into the lead, with another in the third quarter. This meant Spartans went into the last quarter of the game trailing 5-3 and needing two goals to take the match into extra time. An early goal from Best in this quarter for his fourth of the game gave hope to getting on level terms, but another from Berwick was probably a goal too many as they then looked to play the clock down for the win. Overall, this was a promising performance from a full Spartans team that had never played together during pre-season due to holidays and some last minute signings and we know better results will come as the season progresses.
