It has been a good introduction to life at Blyth Spartans for Newcastle United youngster Jonathyn Quinn. The striker joined Spartans on an initial one month loan from the Magpies and within hours of signing last Tuesday had plundered four goals in a training game against Seaton Delaval before making his debut from the bench in Saturday’s FA Cup win over Skelmersdale United.
The Ashington born striker reflected on the first week of his spell with the club and admitted he was looking forward to trying to make an impact during his temporary stay.
“I wasn’t breaking into the reserve squad at Newcastle so I spoke with my agent and the club and we decided to try and get out there and play some competitive football. Spartans were mentioned and I hope to show what I can do here, see how it goes and see how the FA Cup run goes too but so far I have loved it”
The striker was already familiar with Spartans having played and scored in the Magpies 4-0 Northumberland Senior Cup Final win over Tom Wade’s side at St James Park in May. Less than three months later he was in United’s U21 side as they beat Spartans 3-2 at Croft Park in a thrilling pre-season fixture.
However Quinn was pleased to see two familiar faces in the changing room after completing his loan switch and admitted he had taken advice from those players.
“I knew a couple of the lads before I joined the club. I am good friends with Nathan Buddle and I knew Alex Nicholson well from his time at Newcastle. I spoke to both of them before signing and they both only had good things to say about Spartans so I didn’t hesitate to sign”
Quinn made the first FA Cup appearance of his young career in Spartans comprehensive win over Skelmersdale United last weekend. Appearing from the bench in the second half the striker almost made a dream start going close with a low shot within two minutes of replacing Jarrett Rivers.
Despite being “very disappointed” at not getting on the scoresheet he was happy to play his part in the win and had special praise for the travelling Green Army.
“It was a great day and a great occasion. I just wanted to get a goal as well but it wasn’t meant to be. I wasn’t expecting there to be such a big amount of our supporters following us down here but it was really good to see. I think I even joined in with them when we scored so it was good to get a taste of what the club is about”
