News | Matthew Elsdon returns to Spartans

By Niall Bromley

Blyth Spartans are delighted to announce the signing of Central Defender Matthew Elsdon on a non-contract basis.

Elsdon is a familiar name at Croft Park having made 15 appearances for Spartans in 2020 before the season was brought to a close due to Covid-19.

The centre-half came through the ranks at Middlesbrough and enjoyed a loan spell with Inverness Caledonian Thistle where he made nine appearances. After being released in 2018 he signed for Barrow where he was part of the side that gained promotion to the football league.

Following his departure from Blyth, Elsdon then signed for Clyde where he made 36 appearances and scored one goal for the Scottish League One club.

After only playing in behind-closed-doors matches for the club in his first stint, the former Boro man was delighted at the chance to play in front of supporters at Croft Park. “I’m really pleased to be back, I still know a couple of the lads from last time which is good and them and Terry have welcomed me back.

Things are a bit different to last time, so it has been nice in the last couple of pre-season games to be playing in front of the Blyth fans.”

Terry Mitchell added, “Matty’s an experienced player and been here before so knows what the club is about.

He’s worked really hard in training and we’re delighted to have him here. He was up in Scotland last year at Clyde and was a regular in the team, so he’ll bring good experience to our backline.

We’re still working on new signings. We’ve probably got room for two more and fingers crossed we can make progress on that before the season starts.”
