Spartans midfielder Martin Brittain bemoaned his side’s bad luck following the FA Cup exit at the hands of Blue Square North side Workington. A Kyle May goal midway through the first half was enough to ensure that it was the end of the road for Brittain and his team mates in this season’s FA Cup but the former Newcastle United and Gateshead man felt things just didn’t go their way. He commented “Obviously we got a couple of injuries in the first half and that’s disrupted us and meant that a few lads had to do a job for the team and play out of position which isn’t ideal. We adapted well though and give it a good go and we were just unlucky at the end of the day”.
A second cup exit in the space of three days was tough to take for Spartans who are up against things at the moment but Brittain felt they needed to take chances that came their way at key moments of the game. He said “Obviously everyone is very disappointed to lose the game. Workington are a good side in the better standard of league that we play in and we had a few chances but couldn’t take them. The goal they got was from a set piece and at any standard of football that’s not good enough.”
Having recently joined the club after his release from Gateshead in the summer Brittain feels that Spartans fans will only see the best of him once he gets his fitness levels up. The Cramlington born midfielder broke both his tibula and fibula during his time with the Tynesiders and is still finding his way back but insists with game time he will improve. He said “I’m really enjoying it so far and while it’s not been a great start in terms of results, it’s great to be back playing again and getting time on the pitch. I was pleased to get ninety minutes tonight and with more minutes hopefully I can start bringing more to the team.”
