Interview | Armstrong Lauds 1899 Effect

Blyth Spartans manager Alun Armstrong has lauded the newly reformed 1899 Club scheme after securing the futures of Jarrett Rivers and David Atkinson at the club until the end of the 2018/19 season.

“The 1899 club has given us just that little bit of extra funding that has helped us tie these two players down, that’s huge.”

“It’s possible that with out these extra funds, these two players may not be here today. The fans support to us is huge and it was great to see nearly 1,000 people through the gate yesterday afternoon, that helps us attract and keep this calibre of player.”

The 1899 Club has proved an instant success as far as the Spartans’ management are concerned, with now 275 numbers sold earning over £1,300 per month in extra funding.

And with other clubs sniffing round Spartans key assets, the 1899 Club will be a huge benefit to Alun over the next few seasons.

The 42-year-old tells Blyth Spartans AFC TV, “We’ve had clubs sniffing around the likes of Jarrett and David, which is something we could do nothing about.

“Both were offered huge deals elsewhere, and it’s a testament to the lads they’ve decided to stay with us until the end of next season. This is a massive bonus for me keeping players of this quality on the books.”

It’s not just Rivers and Atkinson that have caught the attention of other clubs, but Spartans’ have moved to secure their high-quality squad.

“You look at Dale (Hopson) and Nippa (Dan Maguire), they are also contracted until next summer and we’ve had enquiries about them, but for us to be able to keep these players is a testament to not only them but the executive committee at the club.”

There was speculation earlier in the season around Alun’s future, and he cites the executive committee as one of the reasons he’s here to take the club forward.

“There was speculation about my future earlier this season, but once I spoke to the board and they matched my ambitions to progress this club it was decided. They’re backing me to continue to improve the club and long may it continue.”
