After playing a key role in Spartans Non-League Day win over Grantham Town forward Dan Maguire revealed that he feels the he is relishing playing with fellow forwards Arron Wearmouth and Robbie Dale. The trio have received the nickname “The Holy Trinity” from some of the Green Army as they have caused Evo-Stik Northern Premier League defences some major headaches so far this season and Maguire feels that they will only get better as the season goes on.
“It’s great playing with the two of them. It’s always easier when you are playing with players on the same wavelength as you and we are starting to understand each other’s games more and more with every game. Learning what kind of runs we make and what each other are going to do when we get the ball, it’ll only get better”
Spartans found themselves a goal down after a lacklustre performance in the first half but a much improved second half show ensured they took the points. Maguire was quick to accept that they had played poorly during the opening period but looked ahead to a big week for the club after his goal and a late penalty from Robbie Dale sealed the win.
“We had to battle, the first half nobody played decent football but in the second half we got the ball down and played like we know we can. We probably deserved the win but we made hard work of it. Hopefully we can pick up three points on Tuesday at Droylsden and then have a good go against Fylde in the FA Cup here next Saturday”
A clinical finish from Maguire got Spartans back on even terms twenty minutes into the second half and set up a grandstand finish to the game. Having played most of the season on the right hand side of the attacking trio Maguire found himself pushed into a more central role during the second half, a move that reaped dividends as he was key to Tom Wade’s side taking the points but Maguire insisted he is happy just to do a job for the team no matter where he plays.
“I can’t really remember much about it to be honest, it was a decent strike I guess and credit to Craig Hubbard because his hard work created it. I prefer playing more central because you’re in the game more but I’ll do a job for the team wherever I play and it was nice to get back on the scoresheet again”
