Draw a fair result – Watson

Spartans left back Ian Watson reflected on his side’s draw at Matlock Town and felt neither side did enough to win the game. A Dan Hawkins goal put Spartans ahead right on half time but they were pegged back by a header by Danny Holland in the second half and former Whitley Bay man Watson felt his side would have settled for a point pre-match.

“Both teams had their fair possession of the ball and it was quite a tough game to play in. The pitch wasn’t great and it was quite compact. There was a lot of long ball stuff and we couldn’t get our game going but we would have taken a point pre-match and I think it was a fair result”

It was a memorable day for Dan Hawkins as the striker notched his first competitive goal for the club with a cool finish as he latched on to a smart through ball from Dan Maguire and Watson hopes it will be the first of many for the former Bishop Auckland player.

“It’s great for Dan to get off the mark and hopefully it’ll lead to more for him. It was a great ball from Dan Maguire and to be honest he never looked like missing”

Whitby Town are next up for Watson and his team mates on Bank Holiday Monday at Croft Park. The defender admitted that there were thoughts of last season’s pair of defeats against the Turnbull Ground outfit as they prepare to renew acquaintances.

“We are getting our points at home like we did last year. We owe them one from last year because they got a late winner at their place and then hammered us at Croft Park, albeit with a weakened team. Most importantly though is just to get the points and that is what we will be looking to do”
