Stocksbridge game – post match comment

Spartans manager Tommy Cassidy was delighted by his side’s performance in their 5-0 dismantling of Stocksbridge Park Steels at Croft Park last night. But he wasn’t getting carried away.

Asked if he could have foreseen such a convincing win he said:”Well, I thought if we could play as well as we did in the first half at Witton Albion on Saturday we would have a chance. However when Joe Kendrick’s effort was disallowed I began to wonder! Over all we did well and you could see our confidence growing.”

Cassidy praised all his players.

“Craig Farrell and Robbie Dale were clinical and worked hard. Phil Airey, who missed all pre-season training, had his moments too while in midfield Lee Mason, Tom Berj and Shaun Vipond did well. Tom is full of energy but needs to channel it better. He picked up an ankle knock and is in doubt for the weekend.

“The back four were sound and Conor Grant in goal was assured and generally kicked very well. If there was a criticism of the performance it would be that Stocksbridge did create some chances and we need to start defending better from the front and midfield.

“I’ve also got to say that the crowd were brilliant and we’ll need them behind us again on Saturday when a really good side, Hednesford, visit us. It will be a much more difficult game than last night but if we can play as well as last night for longer periods we will stand a chance.”
