Reflecting on his side’s 4-1 win at Eastwood Town Spartans right back Richie Slaughter felt the the win proved that there is still plenty to play for this season despite the game being effectively a dead rubber. The former Newcastle Benfield man was delighted to see his side take the points and feels they heeded the warning that was given to them by manager Tom Wade ahead of the fixture against the Nottinghamshire outfit.
He said “There may have been nothing to play for today because they are down and we are safe but Tom really drummed into us that we have it all to play for really. Everyone in the squad is fighting for a place for next season and we have to play well to make sure everyone is here and pulling in the right direction for the club again.”
Slaughter found himself getting forward as Spartans dominated the second half and admitted that he is desperate to get a first goal of the season for himself. He revealed that he had been the target of some mockery from his Spartans team mates and was hoping to shut them up by hitting the back of the net in one of Spartans last two games.
He revealed “It was good getting forward for a change. The lads have just been giving me and Neal Hooks a bit of stick because we are the only ones who haven’t scored yet this season but we have had our chances. I think we just need to be patient and I’m sure we can grab a goal over the next couple of games.”
Slaughter looked ahead to the final week of the season and was hopeful that Spartans could finish the season with two more wins, that would make it four wins in a row for Tom Wade’s side. With relegation threatened Kendal Town at Croft Park on Tuesday night and a trip to Nantwich Town to close the campaign Slaughter feels that his side are in an ideal situation to finish the season on a massive positive.
He said “There’s a good chance to end the season well and build on what we have done in these last two games. Kendal Town at home on Tuesday is going to be tough because they are scrapping for their lives and then going to Nantwich Town won’t be easy because they’ll want to end the season well in front of their own fans but we are determined to finish the season well and send everyone into the summer on a positive.”
