Massive pride for Spartans – Purewal

Spartans skipper Arjun Purewal revealed the “massive pride” inside the changing room after his side overcame two red cards to condemn Witton Albion to another defeat. A late Robbie Dale penalty won the game for Spartans but it was a committed and organised performance from Tom Wade’s side that ensured they kept Albion at bay and took three points from the Help for Heroes Stadium for the first time.

“It was an unbelievable performance from everyone out there and we showed exactly what it means for us to play for this club. You look at the game and we were all on top form and committed to getting the three points. The lads are buzzing in the dressing room, we are tired but there is massive pride in that performance”

While there was a committed performance on the pitch there was also one off the park as several members of the Green Army made the trip to Cheshire, including a number of the Cannock Spartans. Purewal and his players made a point of going to the supporters at full time to thank them for their efforts and revealed that the Spartans players were as pleased for the fans as they were for themselves after the win.

“You appreciate the support and it’s great to have them behind us. People come from around the country to see Blyth Spartans and today you see lads from Staffordshire who love this club. That tells you everything you need to know. We could hear them right throughout the game and they have to know just how much our players appreciate them. We are delighted for them today”

In the absence of regular skipper Joe Kendrick the armband was passed to Purewal for Tuesday’s win over Ashton United and he kept the role for the win over Albion. The former Whitby Town man was more than happy to take on the captaincy but was more concerned that his side continued their impressive start to the season.

“When Colin(Myers) gave me the armband the other day I was surprised at first but you just have to do your best. It’s an honour but I just play my natural game and I am more pleased that we have put in two good performances and won two games in a row”
